The election is held the Tuesday after the first Monday in November. The Texas Election Code nomenclature is Uniform Election Date.
Typically, odd year November elections in Texas are for the purpose of amending the state constitution.
Even year November elections, commonly referred to as general elections, are for the purpose of filling various county and state offices.
Local political subdivisions: cities, towns or school districts may hold elections to elect officials, fill vacancies, and submit bond proposals. The City of The Colony holds November elections for city council.
The first Saturday in May is reserved for local political jurisdictions: cities, towns, school districts, and special districts. Also on the May ballot are bond proposals. The nomenclature in the Texas Election Code refers to a Uniform Election Date.
Most jurisdictions fill some of the governing body every year. Most cities and towns have two year terms. A few have three year terms. Even fewer have three year cycles where every third year no election is held. Consult your city or town secretary for specific information. Most school board are three year cycles. Consult your district's superintendent or business officer for information.
Primary Elections are held the second Tuesday of March in even number years. The only election held is for the purpose of making nominations by political parties for the following November ballot.
There are further stipulations regarding the nomination process by party convention in both the Texas Election Code and each political party's rules.
Texas' even year November ballot is determined by a nomination process either by election or convention. Subject to changes from the 2023 legislative session the next Primary Election will be March 5, 2024. In 2024 the Democratic and Republican parties are required to nominate by election. The Green and Libertarian parties nominate by convention. The convention day will be March 12, 2024. Voters may participate in only one party's nomination process.
Limited candidate information for county, district and state elections is at the Texas Secretary of State using search criteria: https://candidate.texas-election.com/Elections/getQualifiedCandidatesInfo.do
Candidate information is input by the chair or their designee of the various parties. Candidates whose office sought crosses county lines file with the state party chair. Candidates whose office lies entirely within a county file with the county party chair.

Most local jurisdictions elect members of their governing bodies at-large. These members are voted upon by all voters in the jurisdiction. Most of these at-large members are voted by place, a number that represents the whole jurisdiction.
In Denton County the following jurisdictions elect some or all of the governing body by single member districts. Single member districts are voted upon by the voters in a particular geographic area within the jurisdiction. De jure these office holders represent the entire jurisdiction as would an at-large member.
